Abstract

EVANS, Denise; ZELA, Paula Miranda De  and  SCHEINSOHN, Vivian. Bioarcheology and paleopathology of hunter-gatherers from the Cueva de Plaza site: review and new contributions. Rev. Mus. Antropol. [online]. 2023, vol.16, n.1, pp.53-66. ISSN 1852-060X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.31048/1852.4826.v16.n1.39069.

The Cueva de Plaza is the first site with multiple burials dated in historical periods for the Valle del Genoa (Chubut, Argentina). The final bioarchaeological analysis and a detailed paleopathological analysis of these human samples are presented in this work. The structure of the bioarchaeological record allows us to consider the possibility that the represented individuals may have died penecontemporaneously or in a limited time range while paleopathological analysis detected two traumatic injuries, lines of dental enamel hypoplasia and a congenital alteration. The characteristics of this context are discussed in the general framework of the model of cultural transmission networks postulated from the rock art of northwestern Patagonia for the late Holocene and its correspondence with the bioarchaeological record of neighboring sites.

Keywords : Bioarchaeology; Paleopathology; Hunter-gatherers; Late Holocene; Patagonia.
