Abstract

CARRANZA, Carlos et al. Components of adaptive variation in Prosopis Chilensis: the bud break index. Multequina [online]. 2000, vol.9, n.1, pp.55-64. ISSN 1852-7329.

A genecology study of Prosopis chilensis was performed in the Estación Forestal INTA Villa Dolores (Prov. de Córdoba), which included 17 populations (provenances) from Argentina and 6 populations from Chile. The project objectives were the following: 1. To verify the presence of adaptive variation in Prosopis chilensis related to the geographic (latitude, longitude), to pographic (altitude) and climatic (precipitation) conditions of the seed source, detected in a previous stage of the project and 2. To provide guidelines for sound seed transfer. In order to determine the beginning of shoot elongation, weekly measurements were done by the end of the winter of the plantation´s fourth year. Genetic differentiation among provenances related to the latitude, longitude and elevation of the seed source was found. There was a direct relationship between the beginning of shoot elongation (Bud break Index BI) and longitude as well as an inverse relationship between the beginning of shoot elongation and the latitude and altitude of the provenances. The latitude and altitude effect could be related to an adaptive strategy of the species to avoid late freezing damage. Therefore, in order to transfer seeds from one area to another, occurrence of late freezing events should be taken into consideration.
