Abstract

COIRINI, Rubén  and  KARLIN, Ulf. Economic potential of algarrobo forests. I: proposal for multiple use in the arid Chaco. Multequina [online]. 2000, vol.9, n.2, pp.133-145. ISSN 1852-7329.

The Arid Chaco has 95% of its surface with a structure called "fachinal" characterized by a dense shrub with few trees, due to the excessive tree cutting and overgrazing. An agroforestry system with an average level of investment is proposed to improve conditions. Mechanical and manual selective clearing will be made in progressive form, at the rate of pulses of 100 ha every 4 years leaving the "algarrobal" forest structure. In the same operation Cenchrus ciliaris will be implanted at the rate of 5 kg/ha. With this pasture plus the arboreal layer we can increase the production of meat to 39 kg/ha/year. Through pruning and selective cleaning the economic productivity of the forest is duplicated. The apiculture production and the rubber (Cercidium praecox) extraction are gotten up in different alternatives from the economic evaluation, as example of multiple use. Net Present Value greater than zero to all the used rates of discount indicates that the invested capital can be recovered, covering the costs with a gain in the production system. One stands out the environmental improvement and the biodiversity, and the minor productive oscillations due the climate since the diversification of the production diminishes the economic risk to the rural production systems. Socially the increase of the entrance and the greater occupation of the familiar manual labor improve the standard of life of the farmers.

Keywords : Agroforestry; Meat production; Selective clearing.
