Abstract

RIOS, Juan Manuel. Alkaloid detection in seeds from native herbaceous plants. Multequina [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.2, pp.51-55. ISSN 1852-7329.

Routine qualitative assays were compared to establish which is more sensitive to detect alkaloids in seeds from native herbaceous plants. Conventional analysis for alkaloid detection such as precipitation reactions and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) were compared using Dragendorff reagent and Iodoplatinate reagent. In addition, it was assessed a minimum threshold of sensitivity for alkaloid detection with Dragendorff reagent when used in precipitation reactions. In this way, detection capability was assessed on extracts from commercial alkaloid-rich seeds of Capsicum spp. obtained from different mass samples. Several native forbs seeds were positive for alkaloids. Results suggest that usual TLC assays are more sensitive to detect alkaloids in seeds than precipitation reactions.

Keywords : Alkaloids; Dragendorff; Native sedes.
