Abstract
KARLIN, Marcos; RUIZ POSSE, E.; CONTRERAS, A. and COIRINI, Rubén. Economic diversification and ecological diversity in multiple use systems of Salinas Grandes, Catamarca (Argentina). Multequina [online]. 2014, vol.23, n.1, pp.5-15. ISSN 1852-7329.
Climatic, productive and economic variability have made the dwellers of Salinas Grandes (Catamarca) adopt diversification strategies for economic activities, implementing multiple use systems, due to the great diversity of environments and resources. The objective of this paper is to analyze the relationships between conditional variables and economic diversification, and to identify life strategies that have set the communities to adopt multiple use systems in Salinas Grandes. Rapid rural diagnoses were made over 81 families from 13 communities of this region. We calculated land use areas for each community, and made floristic censuses over five characteristic environments. With the obtained data, we built economic diversity and biodiversity indexes; we made regressions among the obtained variables. The farmers that raise cattle diversify less because they can capitalize of decapitalize depending on the situation. The ones that cannot perform this activity, due mainly to ecological conditions of their lands, must diversify their production, mainly by goat raising. Total land incomes depend basically on land area and not on vegetation diversity.
