Abstract

ALCALA JAUREGUI, Jorge Alonso et al. Environmental perception as a participatory strategy in soil restoration: San Luis Potosí, México. Multequina [online]. 2020, vol.29, n.1, pp.5-20. ISSN 1852-7329.

Assessing the environmental perception of the population is necessary to establish soil restoration strategies. The objective of this work was to evaluate the perception of environmental problems and indicators associated with soil resources in El Jaral ejido (shared land), Mexquitic de Carmona, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Two instruments were designed and applied; one to evaluate knowledge about the land, uses and customs, attitudes, values and community participation and the other to evaluate 29 indicators on social, environmental and economic issues. Thirty-seven surveys were applied showing that the origin, age range and occupation affect the perception of the environmental problem and the evaluated indicators. The data were analyzed using the SPSS version 16 statistical package with a significance level of p≤0.10. 65.8 % of those surveyed mention that the main problem is soil erosion and 84.2 % would like to participate in reforestation programs to restore soils. Out of 29 indicators evaluated, 15 were among the preference of 80 % to 94 % of the respondents to be considered necessary for decision-making in soil conservation and restoration such as those related to reforestation, community participation in works and practices to restore soils and percentage of soil retention. It is recommended to follow up the studies in the region involving land use planning strategies.
