Abstract

SOSA, Heber et al. Restoration of marshes by hydrological management and revegetation with macrophytes at Laguna Llancanelo Ramsar Site, Mendoza (Argentina). Multequina [online]. 2021, vol.30, n.2, pp.303-316. ISSN 1852-7329.

We present the first results of ecological restoration in a wetland at the Laguna Llancanelo Ramsar Site, a lagoon located south of the province of Mendoza, Argentina. We worked with local people with the idea of generating flow recovery actions for the restoration of wetland areas degraded by erosion and loss of the base levels of the main watercourses. Hydrological management works were carried out with degradable material (burlap bags and wooden stakes) and revegetation islands were built for the recovery of marsh communities associated with this type of environment. These first tests show that it is possible to recover degraded wetland sectors with flow management techniques. It was possible to demonstrate that the replanting of native species proved to be effective since they respond with good growth in the short term if they are properly closed. After two years of the project (2017 and 2018 seasons), more than 150 hectares of wetland and 22 revegetation islands of about 2.25 m2 were in recovery.
