Abstract

FERRARI, Mariela Angela. Intake estimation by means of a 24-hour reminder. Diaeta [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.143, pp.20-25. ISSN 1852-7337.

The 24-hour Reminder is a method widely used among professionals in the area of Nutrition. This technique keeps track of recent intake, useful in studies of descriptive type, and its main strength is that in population studies it allows rates of "no response" low. What is highlighted is the importance of the implementation of the four-step technique and the use of visual models of food or photographic atlas to minimize and control potential sources of bias related to the comprehensive description of foods and drinks and the estimation of portion sizes. When interpreting the results, it must be considered that the information reflects recent intake of an individual, so that a single 24-hour Reminder should not be taken as representative of usual intake. In population studies, a 1-day reminder is used to estimate the average consumption of a group, whereas two observations must be made in at least one subsample when we want to estimate the distribution of usual intake or the percentage of the population with inadequate intakes.

Keywords : 24-hour reminder; Usual intake estimation.
