Abstract

GIORIA, Yanina M; MESA, Milton  and  ESCUDERO, Daniela. The "Ley de Talles" (Size Law) in the context of eating disorders. Diaeta [online]. 2014, vol.32, n.148, pp.24-30. ISSN 1852-7337.

Introduction: Eating disorders represent a health problem that involves eating behaviour, the way people eat and how they do so. A measure to avoid an increase in the prevalence of such disorders in adolescents is through the implementation of a clothing sizes law. Objectives: To describe the compliance rate of the sizes curve in jeans designed for teenage girls in clothes shops in the commercial area of Paraná, according to what is estipulated in the Provincial Law N° 9703. To assess the buyers' perception at the time of acquiring a piece of clothing, to establish if size availability influences on the decision of subsequent diets and to determine which the reactions of the studied population are regarding size availability. Materials and method: Descriptive and cross-sectional study. A closed- questions questionnaire was carried out in 63 female clothing stores, and administered to 91 teenage girls. Results: 85, 7% of teenagers reported there was a variation in the sizes according to the jeans models (classified as classic and trendy). The most prevalent feeling among the adolescents when the adequate size is not found is that of discomfort ( 38,5%), and 61.6% considered starting a hypocaloric diet. A difference in centimeters was observed when comparing to the measures established by IRAM 75300 norm. The larger the size, the bigger the difference in real size, especially in medium and large sizes. Conclusions: It was found that there is a partial compliance with the sizes curve in jeans designed for teenage girls, as there are several jean sizes, but they do not comply with the measure required by law. Teenage girls feel discomfort when they cannot find suitable sizes and this encourages the realization of hypocaloric diets.
