Abstract

BRITOS, Sergio. Is sodium intake a barrier to water consumption in a healthy diet?. Diaeta [online]. 2015, vol.33, n.150, pp.26-31. ISSN 1852-7337.

Concern about high sodium intake through consumption of food and beverages usually derives in restrictive recommendations of products that are not source of such, as in the case of packaged waters. The Argentine population (average) consumes daily a liquids volume adjusted to the recommendations defined by a group of experts. However, the quality profile is not the best, not because of sodium but due to a high proportion of sugar incorporated to the drinks. At the same time, some health and nutrition professionals express confusion about the criteria for labeling and declaration of properties of sodium, a factor that can help in giving the population erroneous recommendations. Lastly, the Argentine Food Code itself encourages this confusion as it prescribes a differential treatment for labeling and declaration of properties of sodium in packaged waters and beverages.
