Abstract
GARCIA BRAVO, Milaidi de las Rosas et al. Folic acid in climacteric women after a nutritional intervention. Diaeta [online]. 2016, vol.34, n.157, pp.20-27. ISSN 1852-7337.
Introduction: During the climacteric stage, important hormonal changes take place due to the decrease in estrogen production, bringing physical and psychological consequences in women, which could be mitigated by the preventive action of folic acid (FA). Objective: To compare serum levels and intake of folic acid in climacteric women before and after an educative-nutritional intervention (ENI). Methodology: Quasi-experimental study design with pre - post testing and control group. Non-probability sampling subject to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sample consisted of 100 women aged 45 to 65 years old, divided into two groups (experimental: 50 and Control: 50), who attended appointments at Internal Medicine and Gynecology, Central Hospital "Dr. José María Vargas", San Cristobal - Venezuela. The first group received ENI (educational talks, leaflets and recipe books of FA, among others) for three consecutive weeks while the second group did not. The FA of the diet was measured by combined method (R24h + frequency of consumption). FA serum was determined by chemiluminescence via SIEMENS equipment before and after ENI. Results: Food consumption with FA increased in the experimental group (+7,55μg/day); while in the control group decreased (-4.64 mg/day ), also serum levels in the control group declined. Conclusion: ENI contributes to the improvement of food consumption and serum levels of FA in climacteric women.
