ABSTRACT: This paper deals with the concepts of memory, oblivion and forgiveness; as they are defined by Ricoeur in his work. I extend their scope to apply them to collective memory. In doing so, I identify three functions that oblivion might play: as a condition for memory; as the opposite of forgiveness and related to repression; and finally, as concealed behind the official memory.
