Abstract

GONZALEZ VARELA, José Edgar. El argumento de lo uno sobre muchos del peri ideōn. Rev. latinoam. filos. [online]. 2010, vol.36, n.2, pp.209-237. ISSN 1852-7353.

In Metaphysics A.9 Aristotle classifies as "less accurate" three of the platonic arguments for Ideas surveyed in his treatise On Ideas (Peri ideōn). The standard interpretation of the Peri ideōn claims that these arguments are less accurate because they are only valid to postulate Aristotelian universals, but not to postulate Ideas. In this paper I intend to call into question this interpretation with respect to one of these arguments: the one over many argument. I claim that this argument, although not valid to postulate Ideas, it is not valid either to postulate Aristotelian universals. This argument is valid only for a conclusion that is neutral between Platonism and Aristotelianism about universals: that there are other entities apart from the particulars.

Keywords : Aristotle; Ideas; Plato; Universals; Peri ideōn.
