Abstract

PAOLETTA, Rubén E; COSTA PAZ, Matías; AYERZA, Miguel  and  MUSCOLO, Domingo L. ¿El trasplante meniscal mejora la función articular de la rodilla a mediano plazo?. Rev. Asoc. Argent. Ortop. Traumatol. [online]. 2012, vol.77, n.2, pp.88-95. ISSN 1852-7434.

Background: Few therapeutic options exist to improve the medium term clinical outcomes in young postmenis-cectomized patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the medium term clinical and functional outcomes in patients treated with meniscal allograft transplantation. Methods: Between 1998 and 2008, 28 patients under-went meniscal allograft transplantation, 17 lateral and 11 medial. Average age was 33 (range: 24-47); follow-up was 47 months. Twenty-one patients received concomi-tant procedures: osteotomies, ligamentoplasties, autolo-gous osteochondral graft, osteochondral allografts and autologous condrocyte implantation. Patients were clini-cally evaluated with the Lysholm and IKDC scores preo-peratively and then annually. Results: At final follow-up, statistically significant improvements (p <0.05) were found in the Lysholm and IKDC scores. Overall, 86% of the patients reported to be completely or almost completely satisfied and 25 of 28 patients (89%) stated they would undergo the procedure if the same problem affected the contralateral knee. Eight patients presented complications related to the rupture of the meniscal allograft, which were treated with partial meniscectomy or arthroscopic meniscal sutures. Conclusions: In the medium term, meniscal transplantation improves both function and symptoms in symptoma-tic postmeniscectomized patients.
