Abstract

RODRIGUEZ, Lorena B.. Intermittent Mining Exploitation and Permanent Wealth Promises: Discoveries, rediscoveries and orderings in Southern Calchaquí Valley, Late Seventeenth- Mid-nineteenth Centuries. Poblac. soc. [online]. 2015, vol.22, n.1, pp.61-91. ISSN 1852-8562.

From the time of the Spaniards' definite settlement in the Southern Calchaquí Valley- towards the end of the XVII century- different scale and length mining projects were developed mainly on the Aconquija mountains and to a lesser extent on the Quilmes area. In this paper, we intend to characterize such ventures by paying attention not only to the way in which they fostered appropriation and conquest of territory in early colonial stages but also to the way in which they succeeded each other. The latter occurred almost intermittently and it accompanied new political and administrative configurations in the context of various conflicts and processes of social change

Keywords : Mining; Tucumán; Catamarca; Colony; Early republic.
