Abstract

DIAZ, Mariela Paula. Urban and Labour Dynamics in El Alto city (Bolivia): between the market and social  production of habitat. Poblac. soc. [online]. 2016, vol.23, n.1, pp.45-77. ISSN 1852-8562.

This work aims to study the production and appropriation of urban territory by Aymara migrants of rural origin residing in two neighbourhoods: "El Porvenir I" and "16 de Julio" in the city of El Alto (Bolivia). The former is a peripheral neighbourhood whereas the latter is located downtown. The study identifies multiple actors and strategies in the dynamics of neighbourhood construction in the period 1985-2012: market, rural informal population (indigenous people) and the State. For this study, we carried out in-depth, semi-structured interviews with key informants and migrant residents and also a survey of members of 50 households in each neighbourhood.

Keywords : El Alto city; Aymara migration; Labour informality; Social production of hábitat; Informal land; Urban appropriation.
