Abstract

CAMUS, Pablo; HIDALGO, Rodrigo  and  MUNOZ, Enrique. Sea Dispute: Common Property, Artisanal Fisheries and Industrial Fishing: The Case of Caleta Cocholgüe in South Central Chile in the Mid Twentieth Century. Poblac. soc. [online]. 2016, vol.23, n.2, pp.91-114. ISSN 1852-8562.

From environmental history we move to the historicity of the sea, especially the changes in the relationship between man and the sea over the years. This research study focuses on the history of fishing in Chile in the mid-twentieth century (in a global context of commercial fishing encouragement). We analyze the relationship between artisanal and commercial fisheries and the right to property definition problems. Political institutions acted as mediators whereas artisanal fishermen played a key role in raising awareness of legal, ecological and economic challenges by deploying distinctive resistance and adaptation tactics.

Keywords : Common property; Artisanal fishing; Commercial fishing; Caleta Cocholgüe.
