Abstract

COSACOV, Natalia. The role of family networks in home location: A case-study of middle-class households in Caballito neighborhood, Buenos Aires. Poblac. soc. [online]. 2017, vol.24, n.1, pp.35-65. ISSN 1852-8562.

Based on qualitative research on moving patterns and daily mobility of residents of a neighborhood in Buenos Aires city, the paper shows that family networks shape city “usage” as well as decisions concerning choice of location.  Geographical proximity to members of the family seems to be a point to consider when contemplating moving. It is a logic that prioritizes not living together but near; something that the “geography” of families seems to attest to. Besides, family networks also influence location since through inheritance, family loans or monetary gifts families provide access to home ownership.

Keywords : Mobility; Location choice; Middle-classes; Family networks.
