Abstract

CALANDRIA, Sol. Criminal Mothers: Contributions to infanticide and female criminality in the province of Buenos Aires in socio-demographic terms. Poblac. soc. [online]. 2017, vol.24, n.2, pp.5-31. ISSN 1852-8562.

In Argentina, the first Penitentiary Census was carried out in 1906. The results revealed that most of the female inmates had been condemned for infanticide. This fact was of great concern to the State because of high child mortality rates and the need to re-populate the territory. Our aim is to analyze these women in relation to the social, economic and demographic characteristics of women from the Province of Buenos Aires in general and to the rest of the female inmates, in particular. We are specifically interested in finding out who they were, the features they shared and the motives that pushed them to get rid of the newly born.

Keywords : Female criminality; Infanticide; Province of Buenos Aires.
