Abstract

FABERMAN, Judith. Población, tierras y sociedad de frontera en Sumampa (sur de Santiago del Estero), a fines del siglo XVIII. Poblac. soc. [online]. 2022, vol.29, n.1, pp.118-146. ISSN 0328-3445.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.19137/pys-2022-290107.

Through the analysis of data from a 1794 ecclesiastical census and other sources, this article discusses the late colonial society of Sumampa, south of Santiago del Estero. It suggests a later and different settlement process, autonomous from the distribution of encomiendas and mercedes de tierra. It also puts forward that socio-ethnic classification had lost its relevance at the time -which is why most of the people in the census were registered as Spaniards- and that the seeming independence of peasant families actually hid difficulties in land access. Finally, the article examines the process that turned the curato into a border area in the 18th c. and suggests that the new settlement of the eastern region was a consequence of a five-decade truce enabled by the reducción de Abipones foundation (1754).

Keywords : Sumampa; borderland; demographic structure; agrarian structure.
