Abstract

MARISTANY, José. Intoxicación literaria: dispositivos de lectura femenina en Argentina (1890-1930). Mora (B. Aires) [online]. 2008, vol.14, n.1, pp.43-56. ISSN 1853-001X.

At the turn of the XIXth. Century, women who read became a serious concern that appears in the essay, the literary fiction and the pedagogic discourse. The intellectual elite was worried about the effects that reading may produce on the souls and bodies of women. The arguments underlying this concern derive, on the one hand, from the image of the "feminine soul", the intellectual ability or disability that were supposed typical in women; on the other, from a particular idea of reading. This article analyses the feminine images that was projected from the authorized discourses designed to control the readings of women, in what we may called with Michel Foucault, a "reading device". We focus on the "schoolmistress writers", Raquel Camaña y Herminia Brumana, whose privileged voices gave advice, kept discipline and warned about the risks of exposing the feminine nature to the inconvenient excitements of imagination.
