Abstract

CORNEJO, Jorge Norberto. Una mujer en la ciencia argentina: Rebeca Gerschman. Mora (B. Aires) [online]. 2008, vol.14, n.2, pp.136-143. ISSN 1853-001X.

This paper studies Dr. Rebeca Gerschman's life and scientific work. She is author of Gerschman's Theory. This theory explains the mechanism through which, oxygen free radicals produce toxic effects on human beings. Gerschman's theory relates different phenomena that are apparently not related, as for example biological aging and biological effects of ionizing radiation. Dr. Gerschman's work represents an important chapter in Argentina's History of Science; despite the fact that she is almost unknown by both, common people and scientists. Experts' declarations about Dr. Gerschman's life and work, as well as a summary of her most important scientific contributions are here presented.

Keywords : Radiation; Aging; Free radicals; Oxygen; Rebeca Gerschman.
