Abstract
DOMINGUEZ, Nora. Mirar madres: Adriana Lestido: espacios, rostros, afectos. Mora (B. Aires) [online]. 2010, vol.16, n.1. ISSN 1853-001X.
This essay analyzes the visual work of the Argentinean photographer Adriana Lestido. Her production has begun during the 90s, and continues up today exploring institutional and family spaces. This artist is especially concerned on maternity. Drawing on black and white images of imprisoned and teenage mothers, and focusing on the aesthetic and emotional aspects of the relationship between mothers and daughters, Lestido points to a redefinition of these ties. Through the resources of disappearance and proximity, separation and encounter, identification and disidentification, the artist builds up affective and visual worlds as plural and conflicting spaces that turn visible the missing images proscribed in a given society. The travel covering the female faces of social neglect or emotional excess configures stories that set the scene for experience, and the ground for ethical and aesthetic interpellation. These stories also raise questions about the construction of female gaze and the modes of representation of the female other.
