Abstract

SOVRANO, Lorena Vanesa; LORENZON, Rodrigo Ezequiel  and  BELTZER, Adolfo Héctor. Macroscopic and histological studies of different segments of the digestive tract of the Rufescent Tiger heron (Tigrisoma lineatum). Rev. Mus. Argent. Cienc. Nat. [online]. 2022, vol.24, n.2, pp.179-185. ISSN 1853-0400.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22179/revmacn.24.767.

This study aims to describe the anatomy and histology of the different parts of the digestive tract of the Rufescent Tiger heron (Tigrisoma lineatum) and to determine a pos sible connection between the above-mentioned elements and the food habits of this species. Ten samples of diges tive tracts were used for macroscopic anatomy and six for histology. This species has an extensible esophagus, a developed glandular stomach, and a simple muscular stomach. The small intestine has an extensive duodenum, and it presents a single caecum with lymphoid functions. The digestive tract shows the usual four laminae: serosa, musculosa, submucosa, and mucosa. Characteristics of the digestive tract of T. lineatum are similar to those of other heron species and are consistent with the diet of the species composed of a wide range of prey items.
