Abstract

ZORZI, Flavia. A "chibouk"-type pipe unearthed at Buenos Aires. Zaranda ideas [online]. 2013, vol.9, n.1, pp.49-56. ISSN 1853-1296.

During salvage archeology tasks in a public work of the city of Buenos Aires, the discovery of a "chibouk", also referred to as "Ottoman", "Oriental" or "Turkish" style ceramic pipe, took place. This paper describes the morphological and stylistic characteristics of this curious piece, the first of its kind to be recorded in Buenos Aires, and compares it with similar specimens found in other regions to try to determine its chronology and area of origin. "Chibouk"-type pipes are not as frequent as kaolin ones in archaeological contexts of the region, which is why there is no literature dealing with them locally. So, it is very likely that there are inedited records and pieces wrongly cataloged. Through this brief contribution we aim to encourage the publication of new records to help assess the representation of "chibouk" pipes in the archaeological record of Buenos Aires and surrounding areas.

Keywords : "chibouk" pipes; Historical Archaeology; Buenos Aires; XIXth century.
