Abstract

LOCATELLI, Fabio Giovanni. Evangelization of the Maynas Indians and “accommodation” of the Tridentine norms in the “Ynforme” of the Jesuit Francisco de Figueroa (1661)*. Rev. hist. derecho [online]. 2020, n.60, pp.79-109. ISSN 1853-1784.

This article analyzes the accommodation of a norm of the Council of Trent according to the " Ynforme de las missiones de el Marañón" by the Jesuit Francisco de Figueroa (1612-1666). After introducing the author and his work, we examine, from the global and local perspective of legal history, Figueroa's reflection on the translation, reception, adaptation and translation of a Tridentine norm, which passed from Trento to II and III Council of Lima, to the Synod of Quito in 1596, until a final accommodation was obtained, half a century later, in the text of the Jesuit. Figueroa, based on the Amazonian missionary experience, used the concept of accommodation, which came from the missionary tradition of the Society of Jesus and referred to the Jesuit strategy to evangelize peoples of very different cultures, to adapt the Tridentine to Amazonian circumstances, with the purpose of promoting the evangelization and salvation of the Maynas Indians.

Keywords : Francisco de Figueroa; Council of Trent; Maynas; accomodation of norms; indians’evangelization.
