This article is about some of the most relevant conclusions of the PhD thesis of the author produced between 2004 and 2007 at Barcelona UPC, which was defended in December 2007. In it two basic approaches are developed. First, the appropriateness of studying the port renovation phenomenon based on the Valparaiso case, which could be considered a paradigm of the port-city relationships. Second, it suggests an approach to the transformation of ports respecting the changes taking place in the adjacent urban area.
