This paper makes review of urban culture and European tradition, since the end of the XIX century to nowadays. The use of single-family houses in the construction of residential fabrics through the configuration of complexes designed to create quality urban environments is relevant. Both, the subjects of reflexion and the design instruments used, help to understand their evolution and also help to determine the essential topics of discussion. At the same time, the extraordinary validity and currency of these experiences becomes obvious, which invites reading of recent practices that are developing extended programs with single-family houses with a critical attitude . Faced with the indifferenciated and banal current extension of suburbs it is intended to show references and useful models for contemporary design.
