Abstract

Urban Planning, an activity traditionally focused on prevention and resolution of urban problems, has been deeply impacted by significant transformations in the socio-political environment, which provides its context. In addition, there has been a seismic change in the epistemological means supporting the reading, interpretation and prospecting of the reality upon which it intends to act. As a result of this the question arises: which are now the real limits and potential of professional action on urban issues, and eventually, is it still a valid proposal at all? This paper intends to address these issues. After an assessment of the current situation of our profession, we offer a couple of proposals intent on clarifying two key aspects of its role under the present circumstances: a) the nature of the themes in its field of action, and b) the structure of the processes through which it operates.
