Abstract

SNITCOFSKY, Valeria. Impactos urbanos de la Gran Depresión: el caso de Villa Desocupación en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires (1932-1935). Cuad. urbano [online]. 2013, vol.15, n.15. ISSN 1853-3655.

During the frst half of the 1930s, the traces of the negative conjuncture became visible in the main cities of Argentina. In the case of Buenos Aires, the slum known as Villa Desocupación (Unemployed Shabtytown was established, in an area that used to be reserved exclusively for the elite of the city. These new precarious houses scandalized pedestrians who were accustomed to a city with strong social and spatial boundaries. Under these cir-cumstances, the National Board to Fight Unemployment carried out a compulsive eviction with the support of the police and the Judicial Power. At the same time, the presence of Villa Desocupación inspired playwrights, poets, and story tellers, whosei works denounced the tensions of a deeply unequal city.
