Abstract

LOIS, Carla  and  MAZZITELLI MASTRICCHIO, Malena. Ways of seeing and making see: The visual experience in the topographer's field work. Estudios Socioterritoriales [online]. 2013, vol.13. ISSN 1853-4392.

Towards mid-20th Century XX, it was broadly accepted that topographers had to capture the morphology and to transcribe it onto a stable graphical and " universal" language. This conception was based on a generalized conviction: maps are the result of intellectual abstraction and " objective" measurements. Nevertheless, the task of the topographer on the field consisted of perceiving and recording several sensible experiences of visual observation of the landscape. As result of theses experiences, the topographer produced visual records that soon after would become inputs to develop the final topographic map. This paper examines the sensible experience on the field and its cartographic inscription.

Keywords : Sensible experience; Visuality; Visual records; Topography.
