Abstract

YURKIEVICH, Gonzalo Julián. Fishing and harbour area in Mar del Plata city: An intimate relationships between a transformed activity and decayed space. Estudios Socioterritoriales [online]. 2013, vol.14. ISSN 1853-4392.

Argentinian fishing activity went thru strong structural transformations during the 1980´s and the 1990´s. This caused a big impact in social groups directly or indirectly related with the fishing industry. This transformation also caused a deterioration of harbours´ space and environmental state. The present paper identifies this decay and explains its reasons and indicates competence and responsibilities on the issue. We hold the idea that during the neo-liberalism period occurred a retraction of the State, a reduction of public investment and an increasing externalization of environmental cost by the private sector, thus increasing the deterioration of urban life quality in Argentinian cities.

Keywords : Fishing industry; Externalization; Harbour area; Spatial and environmental deterioration.
