Abstract

TRONCOSO, Claudia Alejandra. Towards a new tourism geography of Northwestern Argentina: The promotion of "tourism on the expanding margins"in Salta and Jujuy. Estudios Socioterritoriales [online]. 2016, vol.19. ISSN 1853-4392.

During the last years Salta and Jujuy have become relevant tourist destinations in Argentina. As part of this process, new places in both provinces are presented as remote and unexplored new destinations. These new destinations are Puna and Yungas. Historically, tourism has never been an important activity in these areas. Nevertheless, they seem to be the ideal destinations for those tourists interested in visiting regions that remain unknown and can be considered "off the beaten track places. This article aims to analyze how these places are shown as new tourist destinations by public policy. In order to do that, official documents and promotional items were analyzed and in depth interviews were conducted (interviewees include public policy agents from both provinces).

Keywords : Northwestern Argentina; Tourism; Heritage; Salta; Jujuy.
