Abstract

MERA, Gabriela. Between the map and the sketch: a problematization of the spatial segregation of Paraguayans in Buenos Aires city. Estudios Socioterritoriales [online]. 2017, vol.22. ISSN 1853-4392.

In order to contribute to the academical concern about the spatial segregation of immigrants in the cities, this paper aims to study how the immigrants from Paraguay are spatially distributed in Buenos Aires City, inquiring in how the residential concentration of this collective in certain areas of the urban space are related to the day-to-day interactions that they develop. Taking as a starting point a critical view regard to the notion of "spatial segregation" defined in terms of uneven distribution, the paper articulates qualitative and quantitative methods, seeking to provide conceptual, methodological and empirical elements to problematize the relationship between physical distance and social distance; between the spatial concentration of paraguayans in the city and the construction of social and symbolic boundaries, within which differences and distances are constructed as such.

Keywords : Spatial distribution; Spatial segregation; Paraguayan migration.
