Abstract

ESPINOSA, Mariana. Inquiring diversity in the production of difference: Formation and transformation of an ethno evangelical group in Santiago del EsteroInquiring diversity in the production of difference: Formation and transformation of an ethno evangelical group in Santiago del Estero. Soc. relig. [online]. 2012, vol.22, n.37. ISSN 1853-7081.

This paper aims to investigate the diversification of socio-religious identities among an Open Brethren group from Santiago del Estero province (Argentina). In pursuing this objective we will do a study about cultural difference production from an anthropological perspective. First of all, we will present a conceptual viewpoint based on studies about ethnicity that will help us methodologically. Afterwards, we will make an approach to the Open Brethren conformation in the context of the articulation between an English missionary called Furniss and a group of Arabs, at the beginning of the 20th century. In third place, we discuss ethnicity as a structuring principle of the group and as a principle of social differentiation of the evangelical identity. This principle not only works in relation to the religious field and the social space but also, at the interior of the group. In the final section, we will discuss the current tensions that diversify the group and fragment the ethno-evangelical identity.
