Abstract

FUENTES, Sebastián. Catholicism and sex education: traditions and (divergent?) practices in a Catholic school in Buenos Aires provinceCatholicism and sex education: traditions and (divergent?) practices in a Catholic school in Buenos Aires province. Soc. relig. [online]. 2012, vol.22, n.38. ISSN 1853-7081.

Considering Catholicism in our country as a field that operate different representations and identities, we analyzed the ways in which a private Catholic school develops its practices and concepts different from the hierarchy of the Catholic Church on the application of the law of sexual education, between 2006 and 2008. We track these differences in the characterization, which at first we make of the religious congregation and school, and the field of Catholic education where the institution is located. We then present a series of notes of ethnographic work. The implementation of sexual education in school is the emerging that allows us to problematize how appears a self-governing education policy in the private Catholic education subsystem. The differences within the field of Catholic education are managed in practices that seek to preserve the diversity in unity, in a framework where different identifications and church traditions provide conditions of possibility for the implementation of  sex education in school, despite the discourse of the Catholic hierarchy.
