Abstract

SUAREZ, Ana Lourdes. New Ecclesial "Catholic" Movements and Communities: what is it that they renew?. Soc. relig. [online]. 2014, vol.24, n.42, pp.92-131. ISSN 1853-7081.

The article addresses the "newness" brought by New Ecclesial Movements -NEM-, raising the question about what is it that they renew. It first discusses the requirements established by the Vatican to achieve official recognition, as well as the strategy implemented to gain control over them. It then characterizes the universe composed by the 129 NME, based on the following dimensions: year of foundation and of official recognition, founder, their structure, activities, and diffusion. Through a typology proposed to understand the complexity of the universe studied, the article addresses their implication for Latin American Catholicism. It takes up a question raised by Jorge Soneira (2010, 2007): If in a globalization process, movements originated mainly in Europe can propose renewed ecclesial models for Latin America.

Keywords : New Ecclesial Movements; Ecclesial Reneweness; Charismas; Catholisism.
