Abstract
GARCIA SANCHEZ, María Candela et al. Implementation of self-care workshops in patients with lower limb amputation due to diabetes. Rev. argent. salud pública [online]. 2023, vol.15, e116. Epub Dec 26, 2023. ISSN 1852-8724.
INTRODUCTION:
Patients with amputation associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus or cardiovascular pathologies often have difficulties in adhering to the necessary care. The general objective of this health intervention was to provide information on the comprehensive approach required by patients diagnosed with amputation secondary to diabetes or vascular disease in order to promote self-care, encourage new healthy habits and improve quality of life.
METHODS:
A workshop was developed to promote self-care, aimed at outpatients and coordinated by all the professionals of the treating team. It consisted of seven weekly meetings of one hour and a half each. There was a pre-evaluation and a survey at the end with self-care items.
RESULTS:
A total of 24 subjects participated in the self-care workshop experience. In the pre-workshop evaluation, 94% of the participants said they were aware of the necessary care for their health condition. Low adherence was observed in the indicators of balanced diet, physical activity and foot skin care. The final survey showed a better adherence to self-care instructions.
DISCUSSION:
The implementation of a self-care workshop by the treating interdisciplinary team favored the incorporation of self-care, alarm and therapeutic approach guidelines.
