In the context of the recent struggle for the right to abortion in Argentina, the slogan of “separation of Church and State” emerged strongly within a sector of the women’s movement. This elementary liberal demand, formulated in the twenty-first century, stimulates reflection on the scope of secularization in modern societies and on the relations between the political and religious spheres. As a result, this article recovers the theoretical legacy of Max Weber, who not only made the universal process of rationalization his privileged research problem, but also carefully approached the categories of State and Church and the link that these institutions stablished historically. In that sense, the paper aims to: 1) examine the way in which Weber constructs his definitions of these two sociological concepts, specifying their affinities; 2) identify the most important typical-ideal relationships that he sees between the two institutions in the pre-modern world; and 3) characterize the separation of Church and State in modernity and the limitations that he finds in this area.
