Abstract

QUIROGA, Hugo. Democracy is emptied of meaning: Argentina 1983-2023. Temas debates (En línea) [online]. 2023, n.45, suppl.1, pp.161-173. ISSN 1853-984X.

The face of Argentine democracy has been changing over time, as forms of relationship of a way of life. These forms are ideas, perceptions that designate a temporality, a duration, linked to our achievements and failures. However, that face has maintained its features in relation to the regularity of the electoral processes, but with the passage of time and in the face of signs of government failure, citizens accentuate their mistrust and restrict routine support for the elections. These cannot be the only principle that sustains democracy. The raison d'être of democracy does not end here. The decline of democracy is evident, but could we simply say that it has been emptied of the fundamental contents that give it meaning? Argentine democracy is going through its worst crisis since 1983, with an important difference with respect to the previous ones, there are no social riots. But what do we celebrate, then, when we go from crisis to crisis for forty years? What is it that calls us to this commemoration when today we live through a social time that causes us restlessness, discomfort, frustration, extreme poverty, electoral apathy, insecurity? We are, what can we be?

Keywords : democracy; sense; crisis; mistrust.
