Abstract

BURATOVICH, PAULA. Historical Traces in the Social Representations of Teachers and Directors of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area: The Migrant as a “Friend on Trial”. Propuesta educativa (Online) [online]. 2021, n.56, pp.91-106. ISSN 1995-7785.

The political and literary discursive framework that was constituted as hegemonic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries —a key period in the consolidation of Argentina’s state apparatus— produced notions about external migration whose traces can be tracked in the social representations that are constructed currently in the educational institution. Starting from a reflection on the possible mediation between past and current discourses, this article, which arises from an investigation carried out within the framework of a Master's thesis, presents some keys to reading about the historical component of the current view on the figure of the migrant. This outlook can be found in the social representations of teachers and directors of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area and stops in the category of the migrant as a “friend on trial”. The strategy carried out in the research combined a series of qualitative techniques, such as analysis of texts by representatives of the political and cultural elite of Argentina of the time; in-depth interviews with directors from public primary schools, and discussion groups with teachers from public and private primary and secondary schools.

Keywords : Migration; Schools; Cultural Diversity; Teaching; Nationalism.
