Abstract

PINQUE, Germán. Interpretación cultural e intervención política: el concepto de crítica diagnóstica de Douglas Kellner. Intersecc. comun. (En línea) [online]. 2022, vol.1, n.16, pp.3-3. ISSN 2250-4184.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.51385/ic.v1i.16.144.

Cultural interpretation and political intervention: Douglas Kellner's concept of diagnostic criticism. This essay addresses the concept of diagnostic criticism proposed by Douglas Kellner (2011) to analyze texts and media culture and has two fundamental objectives, on the one hand, to explore the genesis and define the most significant features of this practice and its products, as well as broader theoretical and methodological perspective in which it is framed and, on the other hand, developing or recreating it, based on, or in conjunction with, other frameworks and perspectives that I understand can further enhance it as a critical and interpretive strategy (Habermas, 1970; Ortner, 2016; Geertz, 1987; Hall, 2016). In this sense, the concept is recovered and postulated as a theoretical and methodological artifact or tool that can be used and fine-tuned to serve critical, cultural and political tasks or activities. In what follows, I will outline the traditions or schools on which diagnostic criticism is based, the problems with which it is related, the conception of text and media culture that underlies it or that can be inferred, for, once deployed and interrelated the dimensions that this concept involves, outline the way in which it could be reformulated based, at this point, on the model of critical analysis of distorted systematic communication outlined by Habermas (1970).
