Abstract

FALSETTI, Paulo Henrique Eleuterio  and  SILVA, André Coelho da. Kepler's 3rd law and Bohr's hydrogen atom. Rev. enseñ. fís. [online]. 2021, vol.33, n.1, pp.91-100. ISSN 0326-7091.

The aim of this work is to reflect on Kepler's 3rd Law, or Law of periods, beyond its conventional scope - gravitational systems -, showing the possibility of its application to other systems in which there is a central force dependent on the inverse of the squared distance, as in Bohr's hydrogen atom, described by the electrical interaction. In fact, there is a certain similarity between the equation that allows its calculation and the equation that allows the calculation of Newtonian gravitational force. The choice of Bohr's hydrogen atom is due to its structural simplicity: a proton in the nucleus and an electron in orbit. Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the Bohr model is structured based on classic concepts, even though it encompasses the quantum notion that the energy levels, or the rays of the orbits, are discrete. The paper also makes a brief historical review of the constructions of Kepler's 3rd law and Bohr's atomic model.

Keywords : Kepler's 3rd law; Bohr atom.
