Abstract
MIMESSE, Eliane. Controversies regarding the teaching of Portuguese: elementary schools for foreigners present in the city of São Paulo in the beginning of the 20th century. Hist. educ. anu. [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.1, pp.66-81. ISSN 2313-9277.
The present study analyzes the teaching of Portuguese at the elementary schools subsidized by the Italian government present in the city of São Paulo in the beginning of the 20th century. We verified how the teaching of the national language took place concurrently with the teaching of Italian in the subsidized Italian schools located in some of the city's neighborhoods. The study took as basis official documents from the State of São Paulo's government and Italian newspapers. In addition to reference works by Italian authors such as Salvetti (1995), Civra (2002), Sala (2005) and Brazilian authors as Nagle (1985) and Catani y Lima (2002). We concluded that, despite the initiative of the State of São Paulo's government in establishing the Portuguese language as mandatory, its dissemination was slow. The concurrent existence of several Italian schools subsidized by the Italian government, and the widespread use of the Italian language in the city's daily life contributed for the tardiness of the actual teaching of Portuguese.
