Abstract

BLANCO BLANCO, Elvira. Masonic symbolism in Uruguayan School Readers (1920-1960). Hist. educ. anu. [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.1, pp.94-124. ISSN 2313-9277.

For the first time, this article examines Masonic Ideology in school readers by Roberto Abadie Soriano and Humberto Zarrilli, which were in use by Uruguayan Primary Education from the 1930s to the 1960s. The use of contents and symbols used by Freemasonry for instruction of Entered Apprentices is confirmed upon analysis of pictures in the reader for 3rd Year (1920-1930) and the prologues in those for 2nd Year and 4th Year (1960 and 1952 respectively). The philosophical and political teachings that made them acceptable at the time are also examined, arriving at the conclusion that by means of symbols used in School Readers, Masonic Ideology collaborated in the formation of citizens in the configuration of Uruguayan Nationality.

Keywords : school readers; Freemasonry; Abadie-Zarrilli; nation.
