Abstract

BECERRA, Marina. Un prisma original: educación, género, amor y ciudadanía en Herminia Brumana. Hist. educ. anu. [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.2. ISSN 2313-9277.

This paper analyses several aspects of Herminia Brumanas work, teacher and writer (1897-1954) related to the gender relationships system during that period of time. This is a study of her creations mainly about feminity, education, citizenship and love. But these themes take us at the same time to analyse her particular position in the writing (masculine) authorizations system and the women's freedom at that time, taking as refference her own signáis done in her Virginia Woolfs «An own room». It is worked with the «prívate writings» unpublished letters, notesand with her essays, articles and stories. Brumana discuss the hegemonic representations of romantic love that defined women since a nature based on the abnegation and the sacrifice. Since the acceptation of the actual social maternalism, she teaches and writes against the «social conventions» the bourgeois marriage, the family and the teachership as bureaucratic work—. As a prism of gender relationships of that time her work reflects, refracts and descompases at the same time the naturalness effects of división between the public and the prívate, and rights associated to each sex, revealing at times a vanguard sensibility. For this reason, it is also a way to ask the possible articulations among the subordínate place (symbolic and material ones) assigned to women, teachers and writers, and the associated significations on that time to the feminine as those necessarily maternal, selfless and loving thing.

Keywords : Romantic love, gender, citizenship, education.
