Abstract

REYES DE DEU, Lucía. Tensiones y desafíos entre varones y mujeres del normalismo: La maestra normal de Manuel Gálvez. Hist. educ. anu. [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.2. ISSN 2313-9277.

This article analyzes the Hterary representation of gender relations in The Normal Schoolteacher (La maestra normal), a novel by Argentine writer Manuel Gálvez. By the first decade of the Twentieth Century, the expansión of the public education system generated discussions and debates about the role of working women in Argentine society. Galvez's novel stands as a warning to all readers about the dangers of a non-religious education promoted by normalismo. This article examines the development of «the female schoolteacher» as a Hterary character who doesntfit the ideal ofthe teacher as a «second mother». Also, it explores two concomitant outcomes of public education: the «feminization» of males and the «masculinization» of women.

Keywords : Female school teachers, normal school, public education, citizenship.
