In this paper, a historical outline is carried out through different periods in which transcendental changes have been generated in the way of conceiving and making official early childhood education in Mexico. The central and political ideas are recovered from Porfirio Díaz's presidential period, where we find the emergence nursery schools and of kindergartens, going through the institutionalization and regulation of kindergartens and their formal incorporation into the Mexican educational system in 1942, the establishment of preschool education programs between 1980 and 1990, until the moment it was considered constitutionally as a compulsory educational level in 2002 and became part of Basic Education System and a reference for the New Mexican School. This brief historical journey allows us to understand the importance that preschool education acquired in Mexico as part of the National Educational System, moreover, in addition to its orientation towards the development of cognitive skills, its importance is recognized as a space for socialization and an opportunity to contribute to comprehensive training for boys and girls in the country.
