Abstract
MAYOL, Magalí. Bibliotecas escolares en la Norpatagonia argentina: el lugar de la comunidad vecinal (1884-1930). Hist. educ. anu. [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.1, pp.52-67. Epub Sep 07, 2023. ISSN 2313-9277.
During the process of institutionalization of common education in Norpatagonia, the state educational authorities proposed the need to create a library in each school of the territory as a means of civilization and moralization of the population. For this objective to become a reality it was necessary to coordinate with civil society, through the donation of books or their participation in activities carried out in the library.
This paper addresses the relationship between school libraries and the neighborhood community between 1884 and the 1930s in the region. First, it situates the paper in the current development of the Argentinean educational historiographic field. Then, it contextualizes the installation of these libraries in Norpatagonia and identifies the reasons that, for the educational authorities, justified their opening in the region. Finally, the place of the neighborhood community in relation to school libraries is analyzed. In this last point, the differentiated roles assigned to the characterized neighbors, in charge of creating and materially sustaining the libraries, and to the expanded reading subject who was to be instructed through books and reading, are distinguished.
For this article, a documentary corpus was used, consisting of written sources from the educational field: annual reports of ministers of public instruction and inspectors of National Territories, the official magazine El Monitor de la Educación Común, compilations of educational regulations, school censuses and memoirs of teachers who worked in the analyzed region.
