Abstract

ROMANOS, Melchora. Baroque's "Unstable Bridge" Between Two Shores. CELEHIS [online]. 2015, n.29, pp.161-180. ISSN 2313-9463.

In this essay, ideas introduced by Aurora Egido in her book, El Barroco de los modernos: Despuntes y pespuntes (2009) will be discussed. In this text, she describes the cultural panorama in which Baroque art appeared as a topic in the criticism of the frst quarter of the 20th century. It is in this period that the historiographic term was consolidated, and, because of its links with the beginning of avant-garde literature, it involves a double purpose, both critical and practical, which moves from a reading of 16th-century texts to the creative process of the very same writers who approached them with apologetic rather than interpretive purposes. This occurs, for instance, with the reevaluation of Góngora's work by the poets of Generación del 27. Thus, the critical statements by José Ortega y Gasset, Pedro Henríquez Ureña, Alfonso Reyes, Guillermo de Torre, and Jorge Luis Borges will also be reviewed.

Keywords : Baroque; Gongora; literary historiography; modernity.
